To Mu
by T.J. Buckley

It’s been some time now since you took the Journey -
The trip we all must take when life is done -
I wish we could have walked a little further
Together down that pathway towards the Sun.

I would have stopped along the way and told you
That I would come to find you by and by,
And then I’d sit down next to you and hold you;
I couldn’t bring myself to say good-bye.

We’d reminisce about our times together -
The way you’d roam the house and look for me;
Or how you drove with me from California.
We’d count the states we‘ve lived in since then: Three.

You had a way of talking that was different:
It sounded almost human, people said.
You’d climb the stairs each night when you were sleepy
And, underneath my blankets, go to bed.

We’d laugh at how you fought and played with Nancy
And how you always bothered dear old Blue.
The day you stood up to the Catahoulas -
You found your courage - I was proud of you.

I’d mention that a hawk had come to visit
And how I thought to take it as a sign
Your soul would fly to Paradise on bird wings...
Just then, a flock of geese go honking by.

We look to see the Sun is quickly setting -
The pale sky turning twilight all around -
We know that we have reached the final chapter
Of our story. So I cry, without a sound.

Finally, you place your soft paw on my heart,
Then twitch your tail and, turning, say adieu.
I wish you were still here to take this pain away -
I hope I finally did as much for you.
