Dreaming to Escape

Sara was a redheaded, green eyed beauty with a passion for painting and a flair for the dramatic. She was an only child--not by choice--with very few playmates and even fewer experiences. Even though Sara spent 8 years on this earth longing for a life filled with friends and adventure, it was forbidden in her small town of Kalgoorlie located down under. This was the starting place of her exciting story to come. You see, Kalgoorlie in 1894, was literally a goldmine, which made the town and all the townspeople targets for thieves and robbers. To ensure the children's safety they were kept inside the houses at all times for meals, school lessons and chores - a lonely life for a child with no siblings.

One day while listening to her mother weave a tale of life as a dancer, Sara's mind wandered. She started to imagine herself dancing on a magical stage framed with rich red curtains and freshly painted scenery. She continued to dance, to feel the freedom of flying through the air with no cares and no defined destination. She heard the clapping of the audience and looked up to see them, only to realize it was her mother clapping her hands to get her attention.

Each day Sara would have the same experience, someone would be talking and her mind would wander. One night her mother came to her room and asked if she was feeling well.

"It seems one minute you are there with us and the next you are in a far off place. Are you feeling well?"

"I feel fine except for my loneliness. I wish I had other children to play with and exciting experiences to enjoy."

"When I was a child, I had a similar experience and I found that dreams were the answer to my situation."

The next day, Sara realized her mother was right her dreams were the key to having more fun, playmates and experiences. It also created the opportunity to do anything with no limits, barriers or "No's" from her parents.

Sara would think of something she loved or loved to do and could dream for hours. Awake or asleep, dreaming became her favorite activity.

Dreaming provided Sara the opportunity to escape real life and the restrictions and rules without having to pack, plan, travel, ask permission or have supervision. How wonderful she thought, "A vacation without the work or the wait at any time you want with no one to say no that is too dangerous or you are being ridiculous."

When she had nothing to do, she would dream of growing beautiful butterfly wings and flying through the cold, crisp air among the clouds to see the world and show everyone how beautiful and colorful she was.

When she was in trouble, she would dream of escaping into the jungle to play with the baby lions, baby elephants and baby monkeys with nothing to do but run, jump and swing on vines. She would laugh and say, "Let my parents try to find me here."

When her grandmother was not around, she would remember her stories of wisdom and advice to assist her with her current dilemmas.

When she felt blue, she would sit on soft, cuddly clouds and talk to the angels who would cheer her up with their laughter, jokes and smiles.

When it was hot, she would imagine herself by a swimming pool of crystal clear water in a lounge chair of clouds eating a cool ice cream cone of triple chocolate with caramel sauce, chocolate chunks and chocolate covered caramels.

When it was raining, she would dream of sitting on a beach that never gets hot and does not get caught in your swim suit with waves crashing and the sun warming her skin.

When it was cloudy, she would dream of splashing in rain puddles and catching the chocolate flavored rain drops with her tongue while floating on a soft rainbow cloud.

Dreams were amazing to her, helping her to escape outside her restrictive life to do the unimaginable. Sara imagined the world as her own playground where she can try, taste and touch all with no boundaries.

Sara dreamed and imagined year after year until she woke up an adult living in the real world she always wanted. She had managed to dream herself out of Kalgoorlie and into a world of freedom, love and her dreams come true.
