Do Birds Have Weekends?
by Margaret Iacobellis

On Fridays mornings are nests re-arranged,
re-feathered for weekend parties?

Is the hummingbird the lead dancer
the Baltimore Oriole the dazzling singer-model,
Mr. Blue Jay And The Woodpeckers the rock band?

And the cardinals, together always,
do they perch off to the side
only observers, content with each other?

Or the robins, tho considered common,
are they always invited because of their power?

Does the screeching of the crows on Sunday morning
broadcast their Saturday night exploits?

Does the mournful cooing of the mourning doves
signal a hangover song?

And the rapacious crow, snubbed by all,
tomorrow will he again pillage and terrorize
the neighborhood in retribution?
