Stories from the Other Side
The 5th edition of Stories from the Other Side (Pearson Custom Publishing, ISBN 0558209076, $47), is out! Originally published in 1999, as a collection of rite of passage memoirs, Stories in the new edition will include a tenth anniversary section from naturalist writers. Other topics include social justice issues: the human face of poverty in the third world; Dispatches from the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan; the homeless and HIV-positive people in New Haven.

Creative Soup contributor Frank Crowley, Editor, launched this anthology, originally, for Gateway Community College students as a reader for composition courses and for previously unpublished writers. He continues to seek out new voices in Connecticut and in Tucson, where he visits yearly at the Poetry Center of the University of Arizona.

The Best of Boston Literary Magazine
Creative Soup contributor Doug Matthews is included in this year’s The Best of Boston Literary Magazine, which features poems, haiku, prose poetry, dribbles, and drabbles. Editor Robin Stratton writes: “American humorist Don Marquis once said that writing poetry “is like dropping a rose petal into the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo.” Well we say, who wants to hear an echo? For us, watching the petal float scarlet in the air is enough; in fact, it's what we came here for.”

Shepard Fairey: Supply & Demand
February 6 - August 16, 2009

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston

In March, I had to opportunity to see this phenomenal exhibit of Shepard Fairey's work. For those of you not familiar with Fairey, he is the artist behind the Obama HOPE poster--and oh so much more! Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand traces the development of the artist's career, from his earliest "Obey" imagery through his latest efforts, and includes screen prints, stencils, stickers, rubylith illustrations, collages, and works on wood, metal, and canvas.

If you have a chance, GO to this exhibit. His work is extraordinary and thought-provoking on a number of levels. - Jen Payne, Editor
