Of Bathtubs and Fountains

This spring (February 2007) I made my annual trek home to Florida to visit my parents. Several home renovations were in progress when I arrived, including the removal of a large plexiglass bathtub to make way for a walk-in shower. My brother, Joel, didn't want to toss it in the local landfill (he's a friend of the earth, like myself) so we decided to turn it into a fountain to inspire our mother to make time for more meditative moments. Last year, we made a bird bath by digging a hole in the ground and filling it with concrete.

With the help of our step-brother and step-sister, we scraped off the rubber flowers, plugged up the drain-hole, built a foundation of found objects (cinderblocks, glass blocks and wood), painted it with (terra cotta) Fleckstone, attached an electric switch, decorated it with broken marble slabs, rocks, plants and other objects and filled it up with water. After much rearranging to get the water to flow properly, it was finished after
only a few days. It was a project fueled by the love of nature and love for family.
