TALK TO ME

Communication...in the "old days," it was as simple as picking up the phone or writing letters. We made do with phones attached to walls, pay phones along the road, folded pieces of paper and stamps.

But these days, with the inundation of technology, there seems to be a multitude of ways we can communicate.

I say "seems," because I wonder: are we really communicating?

"Yea, I'm at Wal-mart. Yea, I'm in the potato chip aisle," we drone on our cell phone.

"FW: 462 jokes I thought you'd enjoy," reads the subject line in an email.

"LOL," we respond.

"R U OK?" we text-message. "OKFN," appears on the screen.

Benign conversations. Short-hand interactions. Is that enough?

Do they feed our inherent need for true connection with each other? For intimacy and relationships? For real discourse about the important issues in our lives?

Are we really communicating?

This was the question posed to our contributors for the Summer Installation of Creative Soup. I hope you find inspiration in their responses!
