ON TRAVEL AND TIME
TO STOP
Gazing out upon the eight inches of snow so gracefully draped here
yesterday, it is hard to imagine that just a few weeks back I was
traveling in the middle of the Texas desert with the windows down
and my sleeves rolled up.
The trip--a four-day adventure through Big Bend National Park--was
fantastic, and I was lucky to share the experience with my good friend
DeLinda and my sister Stef. The three of us took off just days before
Christmas, and had a fabulous time exploring the vast expanses of
western Texas.
It was a much needed break for all of us, and we each welcomed the
opportunity to stop and rest our weary selves for awhile. I don't
know if I would consider a 1500 mile trek truly stopping or resting,
but the lack of work and deadlines and busy-ness certainly allowed
our souls to calm down a bit.
By the end of the trip, we were no longer talking about clients or
projects or work. We had other priorities: food, wine, sleep. Our
pace was slowed, our faces and shoulders relaxed. DeLinda sat comfortably
behind the wheel, and enjoyed the peace of the long stretches of highway.
Stef, cocooned in the back seat, knit an entire afghan! And I wrote...wrote
more than I have in years!
It is amazing what a little free brain space allows you to accomplish!
Wait! Do I hear a New Year's Resolution in there somewhere? Perhaps.
Or maybe a wish for all of us...a wish for a peaceful and creative
new year, with ample time to think, dream, wish and simply putter
about!
