This week, I mailed
the fall issue of the Words by Jen newsletter. While putting it together,
I realized I wanted a photo of acorns. Digital camera in hand, I headed
out in search of the perfect photo.
It was a beautiful, cool New England afternoon, and the crystal blue
sky created a perfect backdrop for the brilliant fall palette. Quiet
now, with the clutter of boats gone from Branford harbor, the only
sounds were the crisps of leaves in the trees above. "Maple. Maple.
Maple." became my mantra as I searched for the tree that would bear
my bounty.
"Maple. Maple. Maple. Oak!" I was delighted as a child and laughed
at myself as I scooped up acorns and hid them in my pocket.
"Maple. Maple. Maple." I did not go back to work that day.
A broad margin of leisure
is as beautiful in a man's life as in a book. Haste makes waste,
no less in life than in housekeeping. Keep the time, observe the
hours of the universe, not of the cars.
